Reigning Silences

Brian Baruch

the reigning silences nestle unto this night awakening below a deeper stillness

where places reminisce of a time before time where primordial gusts fan the heavy hinges of mysteries left behind

where hopes that were lost remain elegantly unfound paired and anchored along parched sea-banks

its bed undone with bleached banners and the spoils of champions who stroked their fires to vanity's rake

here, the mighty were felled by the stroking of their own hollow hearts

ambition's lyre plays for them no more lusting instead for memories of a gentleness once fed but now there is only silence

quiet as the breathless moon honouring aspirations the ghosts of something more fleeting as a mortal flame, love's labours succumbing to the brevity of man
